I cannot describe Love, Baxter better than the statement above, which is why I felt compelled to quote it verbatim from the front page of this expertly curated and highly resourceful directory.

Driven by the love and determination of creator Adam Greenbaum in 2024, Love, Baxter has grown into a connected network of professionals from every corner and aspect of end of life care and services you can possibly think of, and then some.

In veterinary medicine, there is a huge gap in end of life care and supporting the grieving pet parent. While not every veterinary practice falls short in this service, most of them do.

Why?

As a professional CVT in the field, who has experienced both losing a pet and being on the other side consulting the grieving client, to me, the answer is clear:

  • Lack of staff utilization

  • Lack of resources

  • Lack of business skills

  • Burnout and compassion fatigue

  • Lack of training

  • Lack of prioritizing one of the most important services a veterinary practice could possibly provide to their clients

In a fast paced profession, where we juggle high stakes responsibilities, constantly multitask, and often skip lunch because we’re back-to-back with appointments, we may find ourselves performing yet another euthanasia. Yet this is one service we cannot rush or short change. It remains essential, not just for the pet, and the pet parent, but for the veterinary practice and the industry as a whole.

What steps can we take to effect change? I believe a fundamental paradigm shift is needed across the industry, redirecting attention and resources toward enhancing education and training in end of life care.

Love, Baxter is the catalyst needed to continue supporting pet parents as they face the inevitable. While I’m deeply appreciative that this site exists, it’s clear such a resource should have been established years ago. My hope is that, as this network expands and more attention is focused on it, veterinary hospitals will update their protocols, better utilize their teams, increase staff education, and elevate this service to a priority within their practices.

To elevate your end of life care services, whether you’re refining an existing program or building one from the ground up with enhanced compassion and education, I invite you to join me for a one hour webinar hosted by VETgirl, where I’ll cover everything you need to know: Feb 8 @ 8PM EST - more information to follow.
